String Orchestra

The string course, new this fall to District 62, is open to all students within the district. It is a credit-granting, advanced placement high school course and students will receive high school credits for up to 5 grades starting in grade 8; however, students are encouraged to join from Gr.6 onwards.

The course has two levels: beginner and intermediate. Students with prior experience should register in both Orchestra 10A and Orchestra 10B. For students currently taking private instruction, Orchestra would complement their lessons.

The course is held at Journey Middle School in Sooke. Qualified string teachers will be teaching all classes. Each student will have a sectional/technique class in addition to the orchestra rehearsal.

Expectations

Home practice is a requirement of the course. Class attendance will be monitored and students are expected to show proper orchestral behaviour.

Students should arrive 15 minutes before the start of rehearsal to prepare and tune their instruments. They must bring their own music, a pencil, listen carefully during rehearsals and sectionals, be respectful towards others, and prepare their part during home practice. Attendance at performances is mandatory.

Instruments

Students must have their instruments, which must be of acceptable quality. You can rent an instrument from a variety of music stores in the area, such as Larsen's Music. An instrument rental night will be held at the beginning of each year to facilitate this.

Each student will need a music stand for his/her home practice.

Materials

String Explorer Book 1 and 2 will be used depending on the level of the student. Books will be ordered through the program at the cost of $10.00 per book.

Home Practice

1. Students are expected to practice 5 times a week.

2. It is best to practice early in the day and to keep to a schedule.

3. Students should keep a check-list of the weekly practice assignment and have daily goals.

4. It is recommended that violinists and violists do the first half-hour of practice standing up, to help develop better playing posture.

5. Most importantly, praciticing is a habit. Establish a good routine right from the start.

Assignments

There is an online component to the course. Students will access and complete online assignments. Practice records will be kept electronically as well. Students will be expected to attend occasional live performances.
